How To Combine Fabrics In A Room

How To Combine Fabrics In A Room

There is a formula for having fabrics in different patterns work together in a single room. Choose what is called, the “lead fabric” first. The lead fabric is the one with the most pattern or depth of color, (visual weight), so decide where that fabric is going be applied.

In most cases the largest piece of furniture gets the largest pattern. If there is a large pattern on a rug, then a stripe or large check could work, but normally not a large pattern in the same type of design as the rug. Geometrics, stripes, plaids, checks, and animal prints can always be combined with florals or paisleys or the very popular Ikats.

Colors must match exactly or pull one or two colors out of the lead fabric for the coordinate. Contrast cording can be applied to seat and back cushions and to the body of a chair or sofa as detailing and a pop of color. Pillows on the upholstery in a complimentary color will also bring the room together for a great look.

It’s balance, rhythm, and harmony in design that makes the room work. Don’t make a costly mistake.
